2019 Team Awards

At the end of the season, USD Rugby designated their team award winners. The winner of the awards were as follows:

Rookie of the year- Mark Boschetti

Boschetti had a stand out rookie season, in a very stacked class of freshman players. Boschetti started every league game for USD, playing 13 primarily. Boschetti was a standout in the 7s season and was the team’s top try scorer. He also earned an honorable mention for the gold coast all conference team for his work in the league season. We look forward to many future awards for Mark.

Brad Yim Award Winner- Darren Seward

The Brad Yim award is given in memory of Brad Yim, and is given to the player who best embodies the spirit and values of USD Rugby. The award is given by the departing senior class to the player they feel is most deserving. This year the team chose Darren Seward as the Yim award winner. Seward was a standout second row in league play, and has an outstanding 7s season on top of that. When USD’s captain and vice captain went down with injuries in the West Coast 7s, Seward stepped up and led the team. For the second season in the row Seward was selected to 1st team all conference. Darren was selected to the pac-coast all star team as well. We are excited to have Darren’s leadership during his upcoming senior season.

Best Forward- Andrew Lopez

Andrew Lopez deservedly won the best forward award for his efforts this season. As tight head prop, Lopez was the anchor for the scrum and the forward pack. His tireless work ethic led to dominant performances from USD’s scrum. Lopez also excelled in open play, often outpacing backs in the open field. Lopez was selected to the 1st team all conference as tight head prop. Lopez was selected to the pac-coast all star team as well. As a graduating senior, USD will sorely miss Lopez’s leadership and impact on the game.

Best Back- Mickey Miller

Miller became become part of a select group of players to win best back and best forward during his USD career. Mickey has player multiple positions for USD, with this year being his first in the back line. Mickey was dependable for a physical impact from the 12 position. Hard hits and big runs were the cornerstone of his game, with the ability to distribute crucial to USD’s wide attack. Miller was also captain of USD’s 7s and 15s teams, providing a valuable wealth of experience on the field. Miller was selected to both the gold coast all conference team and the pac coast all stars. Miller played #8 and #12 for the championship winning all star teams.

Most Valuable Player- Adam Swete

Swete rounded out an outstanding 4 year career at USD with the MVP award. Swete was outstanding all season for USD. His work at the breakdown consistently won turnovers for USD. As starting hooker, Swete consistently executed at the set piece for USD. Not to be a one trick pony, Swete also took over kicking for points for USD this season, excelling at that as well. He was also a valuable member of the 7s team for USD this season. Swete was another player who was selected to the all conference team as well being selected for the pac coast all stars. Swete leaves the team after a great 4 year run with many memorable moments and performances.
