City Champs Game 2 vs Mesa JC
USD played game 2 of the city championships directly after the game 1 victory. The opponent would be up and coming Mesa College. Game two was a strong offensive performance from USD, with a final score of 46-5 in a 40 minute game.
USD started strong with Isoa Moimoi offloading to Henri Vatinel for the first score. Mark Boschetti would dart through the defensive soon after and score under the posts. With the score at 12-0 after 5 minutes, USD started to empty the bench early. Over the course of the match USD used every sub available (14 bench players) to get all young players some needed game time. Henri Vatinel added to his tally and scored his second try of the game as he displayed high-end speed and elusive running. Cam Miller would score soon after to make the score 26-0 just before halftime. USD would add one more try before halftime, with Owen Weikert powering over from short range. It was Weikert’s first try for USD and was a well-earned finish from a strong passage of play. The halftime score stood at 31-0.
With a young lineup starting the second half for USD, there was some growing pains . Mesa college punched in a try for their first points of the day. USD quickly struck back and Michael Ramos score the best try of the game for USD. Ramos took a crash ball and bounced through several tackles. Ramos had a lot to as he broke into open space, with the fullback in between him and the try line. Ramos delivered a strong stiff arm that sat the fullback down, and he was in for the score. Another nice try was scored shortly after, with Jordan Sandoval running the offense at flyhalf. Sandoval sent a grubber through the defensive line, and David Alba gathered the perfectly weighted kick to push the score above 40 points. Conor O’Shaugnessey would snipe off a ruck to finish off the score for USD, making the final score 46-5 in favor of USD.
